My problem with .447 is the Start menu where about half of the objects I had there disappeared today. Went back to a previous Restore Point; didn't help. Guess I will have to do a complete Refresh/Restore of Win 10 tomorrow. Not talking about the Insiders Preview here but rather the everyday production model where all the bugs are supposed to have been worked out. Very frustrating! About ready to tell MS where to put it.

Hello,

Do you experience the issue only with Classic Shell or also without it? If it's only with Classic Shell, it may be a temporary compatibility issue with the program. If it's an issue even without the program, then Microsoft will need to fix it or a temporary fix needs to be found.

Thanks for the suggestion Awesome1pc2. I removed the ClassicShell, positioned the icons where I wanted them and rebooted the PC. The icons were moved again, so the problem happens with and without ClassicShell installed.

I still haven't had a solution to this problem and still need help getting this solved. I know it had to have been caused by an update to Windows 10 since the problem did not exist until that update was installed. My wife's PC is still on the older Windows 10 version and she does not have the problem. Looks to me like Microsoft could quickly come up with a fix for the problem

Problem Solved... Maybe

Evidently the Update that started the problem had changed the Icon Spacing and the Icon Vertical Spacing values. Mine originally were -963 for Icon Spacing and -913 for Icon Vertical Spacing. Yours are probably different. I changed The Vertical Spacing to -900 and the problem has been resolved... I hope. Evidently the bottom icon row was conflicting with something in the bottom left and right corners of the screen. If you feel comfortable messing with the Registry you can try this:

If you don't feel comfortable doing this, don't do it. If you accidentally change the wrong entry, you can really mess things up. In older versions of Windows there was an easy way to set these parameters without wading around the Registry. It's a shame they have eliminated, or if not eliminated, hidden this capability.

Start > Run > Regedit

HKey Current User > Control Panel >Desktop > Windows Metrics and look in the right pane for Icon Spacing and Icon Vertical Spacing. Right click on the one you want to change and select Modify. Finish and exit.

Hopefully the next update won't upset the apple cart again.

With pointer on blank space on the desktop > hold down "ctrl" and roll mouse scroll wheel to reduce size of icons. Of course first right click on desktop blank space then rollover "view" and be sure no check marks are shown beside "auto arrange" or "align icons to grid".

I had the same issue and received response that so far is working. My icons began moving after installation of 2017-08 cumulative update win 10 version 1703 (KB4034674).

When I clicked auto arrange items it fixed the problem and hasn't gone back like it was before.

The original question circled around wanting to manually place icons where the user prefers. Thus AUTO arrange will not solve the issue.

After my first attempt to stop icons from moving from where I manually placed them, using procedures as shown in my above post, the icons moved again after a week.

So I reduced the icon size even more and another week has past and the icons have remained where I manually placed them. Maybe it will hold this time.

Many many people have been annoyed by this ~~problem~~ feature, throughout many versions of windows and in Windows10 it is still here.

Either MS cannot add a simple function like: lock current icon layout, or they just don't care about people's frustrations, to me it looks like the latter.

All the reasons given for why this could/should and is designed to happen don't justify automatically moving all icons to default position without asking the user if (they are sure) they want this.

There is and has always been an option to move all icons to default, a simple lock function, preferably with several personal saveable layouts would make a lot of people happy.
